The National creates instant hype.

Booth exclusives. Fresh slabs. Day-one eBay listings. Low-numbered refractors. The whole room starts acting like every card with a logo or serial number is suddenly investable.

That is the trap.

The National is a liquidity event — not a permission slip to chase every premium.

The cards I care about this week are not just “rare.” They have to line up across three things:

  • the subject has real demand,

  • the card has actual scarcity or condition scarcity,

  • there is a believable next buyer after everyone leaves Rosemont.

Here are seven cards I’d actually watch during National Week.

1. Cooper Flagg — 2025-26 Bowman Chrome Gold Mojo Refractor RC /50

Exact card: 2025-26 Bowman Chrome #BCV-1 Cooper Flagg Gold Mojo Refractor RC /50

Flagg is the obvious National-week basketball heat. Obvious heat is dangerous, but the Gold Mojo /50 is at least the right kind of lane: pro-uniform rookie cycle, low-numbered chromium, and a card that can stand out from the flood of base and college-era Flagg inventory.

Working anchor: Sports Card Investor/search snippets showed the raw Gold Mojo /50 last sold around $1,265.

PhatBox call:

  • Buy: clean raw at or under $1,050

  • Watch: $1,050–$1,350

  • Pass: $1,500+ unless it is a gem candidate or premium serial

Risk: new-product supply discovery. There are a lot of Cooper variants, and early pricing can get messy fast.

2. Paige Bueckers — 2025 Panini Prizm WNBA Gold Ice RC /10

Exact card: 2025 Panini Prizm WNBA #5 Paige Bueckers Gold / Gold Ice Prizm RC /10

Paige is the WNBA name I’d rather watch here because the market is still trying to price her post-college, pro-rookie demand. The card has the ingredients: Prizm brand, true WNBA rookie lane, and /10 scarcity.

This is not a base-card thesis. The base can be cheap. The scarcity is the point.

PhatBox call:

  • Buy: raw /10 at or under $1050

  • Watch: $1050–$1,250

  • Pass: $1,500+ unless it is PSA 10, jersey-numbered, or a clearly premium copy

Risk: exact comps are thin. This is a watchlist card, not a blind-buy card.

3. Matthew Stafford — 2009 SP Authentic Rookie Patch Autograph /499

Exact card: 2009 SP Authentic #403 Matthew Stafford Rookie Patch Autograph /499

This is my favorite value case on the list.

Stafford has the Super Bowl, the volume, the longevity, and the Hall-of-Fame conversation. But his card market still does not always price him like a quarterback with that résumé.

The SP Authentic RPA /499 is not the loudest Stafford card. That is why it is interesting.

PhatBox call:

  • Buy: clean raw with 2-color+ patch at or under $325

  • Watch: $325–$400

  • Pass: $450+ raw unless patch quality, auto, or grade is clearly above average

Risk: patch quality matters. Autograph quality matters. Condition matters. Do not comp a weak one-color raw copy against a premium patch.

4. Macklin Celebrini — 2024-25 Upper Deck Young Guns Exclusives /100

Exact card: 2024-25 Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns #451 Macklin Celebrini Exclusives /100

For Macklin, I do not want the base Young Guns as the main National Week idea. It is too obvious. I also do not want to force the Speckled Rainbow PSA 10 angle if it is already pricing like a grail.

The better watch lane is the Young Guns Exclusives /100: flagship Young Guns brand equity plus real serial-number scarcity.

PhatBox call:

  • Buy raw: at or under $3000

  • Buy PSA 9: at or under $4750

  • Watch raw: $2,700–$3350

  • Pass raw: $4,000+ unless serial/eye appeal is exceptional

  • Buy PSA 10: at $6000-$6500

Risk: Hockey liquidity is thinner than NBA/NFL. Entry price matters more, but Macklin will be the face of the NHL for the next decade. Do not get left behind.

5. Lamine Yamal — 2024-25 Topps Chrome UEFA Sapphire Image Variation SP

Exact card: 2024-25 Topps Chrome UEFA Sapphire #27 Lamine Yamal Sapphire Image Variation SP

Yamal is one of the cleanest soccer names heading into the World Cup runway. But the obvious Yamal cards are already crowded.

The Sapphire Image Variation SP is the better watchlist angle: premium product, image-variation scarcity, and less obvious than the heavily discovered 2023-24 Sapphire lane.

PhatBox call:

  • Buy raw SP: at or under $120

  • Buy PSA 10: at or under $405

  • Watch raw: $120–$150

  • Pass: raw $120+ or PSA 10 $405+ unless the comp trail is stronger than current visibility

Risk: second-year card, SP print run not public, and exact sold comps are thinner. This is a sharp watch, not a chase.

6. One Piece — Trafalgar Law [Manga] OP10-119

Exact card: Trafalgar Law [Manga] OP10-119 — One Piece Royal Blood, English

Law is a top-tier One Piece character, and this Manga rare is still trading in the same general raw lane as Mihawk despite arguably stronger character demand.

That gives it a real content angle: not the cheapest One Piece card, not the most obvious grail, but a scarce chase with enough comp volume to price with discipline.

PriceCharting anchors:

  • Raw: about $400

  • PSA 10: about $1,050

  • Recent July raw sales clustered around $450–$577

PhatBox call:

  • Buy raw/NM: at or under $450

  • Fair/watch: $450–$500

  • Pass raw: over $600

  • Buy PSA 10: at or under $850-$1000

  • Pass PSA 10: over $1,200

Risk: modern One Piece supply can keep building. Keep English, Japanese, Chinese, and proxy/custom listings separate.

7. Pokémon — Luigi Pikachu #296/XY-P Japanese Promo

Exact card: Luigi Pikachu #296/XY-P — 2016 Pokémon Japanese XY Promo, Special Box: Luigi Pikachu

This is the high-end cultural grail on the list.

Mario Pikachu gets more attention. Luigi Pikachu gives you the same Nintendo × Pokémon crossover thesis at a lower entry point.

That matters because this is not just a Pokémon card. It is Pokémon, Nintendo, nostalgia, and global character demand in one asset.

PriceCharting anchors:

  • Raw: about $3,900

  • PSA 9: about $8,105

  • PSA 10: about $15,600

  • Recent raw examples mostly around $3,350–$4,350, with outliers

PhatBox call:

  • Buy raw authentic/NM: $3,300–$3,900

  • Fair/watch raw: $3,900–$4,500

  • Pass raw: over $4500 unless condition is elite

  • Buy PSA 10: at or under $15.5k–$16.5k

  • Pass PSA 10: over $19k

Risk: counterfeit/custom/proxy risk is real. For this card, authentication is not optional.

Final rule

Source discipline: Several card-data routes were partially blocked, so some anchors are from PriceCharting/SportsCardsPro aggregation, Card Ladder/Sports Card Investor snippets, and indexed sold/listing snippets. Buy zones should be refreshed against exact eBay/Card Ladder solds before making expensive purchases.
